Adam and Eve have been banished from Eden. What is next for them?
Adam and Eve may have been kicked out of the garden, but they are still made in God’s image. They still have the ability to reproduce after their own kind, because Adam’s seed is in him. So they have two children; sons called Cain and Abel. This is the first human family on the earth. Things seem to be looking up… until Cain murders his brother Abel out of jealousy. God had been pleased with Abel’s offering of the first and best of his flock, but displeased with Cain’s offering of just some of the fruit of the ground (not the first and best).
As a result, Cain gets a bad attitude and kills his brother. It is clear that the sin nature which Adam and Eve received when they disobeyed God is spoiling things. The problems in this first family are just one expression of the sin nature that everyone since Adam and Eve has been born with. We have all been born of the seed of a man – which has the sin nature that Adam and Eve chose in it. Clearly, humanity needs Someone without a sin nature to rescue it. That Someone is Jesus, about Whom we spoke last time. The whole Bible, from the garden of Eden onwards, until Jesus’ death and resurrection, is a series of stories of man’s tragedies and triumphs whilst struggling with a sin nature. It is clear something needs to change, and that is why God sent Jesus, Who said that we must be born again. We have to receive a second birth, not through human seed or our sin nature, but through the seed of God (His Word, Who is Jesus), giving us a new nature – the sinless righteous nature of Jesus Who was not born of man’s seed.
However much man messes things up – from the beginning in the garden, through the first family and all the accounts until Jesus’ death and resurrection – God’s redemption plan, which has been fulfilled in Jesus, is enough to cover and pay for every mess and all sin. We can be born again and live out of our new sinless Jesus nature.
Isn’t that great news!
